Midlands & Wales

 

Nuthurst Grange Hotel - 17 July 2008

 

The first of the Midlands regional meetings to be sponsored by an IDE member was well attended with over 20 members enjoying the presentations, discussion about IDE events and the tasty Indian food served prior to and after the meeting.

 

IDE President David Ross Turner opened the meeting by welcoming all of those present, some of whom having travelled from other areas to attend, and thanking Adrian and Noel McLean for sponsoring the meeting, before introducing Adrian McLean as the first speaker.

Ireland

 

John Woodward, IDE Seminar Director, and David McVeigh, Sales Manager, Harland & Wolff HI Ltd, led a very successful meeting on 13 December 2007.

 

David conducted the party around the MSC Napoli and explained the difficulties in ship dismantling.   Following the visit there was a very interesting talk on the Napoli with many questions being asked.

 

The gathering then turned to IDE business.  The first question asked was whether people who were not members of the IDE could attend meetings and seminars.  John said that education and dissemination of information about good practice in demolition was part of the Institute's remit as a registered charity.  All interested parties were most welcome to come along.

 

He also spoke about the Institute's seminars and the possibility of a road show of seminars in the summer of 2008.  These, like the local meetings, were open to members and non-members alike.

 

North of England

 

IDE Vice President, Terry Quarmby, and Council Member, John Woodward, organised a very successful meeting on 15 March 2007 in Cockermouth when Anthony Hewetson spoke on "Nuclear Demolition"

Scotland

 

Jim Caldwell MIDE and John Barr NDTG Training Adviser are thanked for organising a very successful and informative day at the Garfield House Hotel, Glasgow on 22 June.

 

Martin Lawrie of B & M Associates spoke on "CDM 2007 and Demolition"

 

Gordon McLelland of the HSE spoke about "Asbestos Regs including unlicensed"

 

John Barr of Construction Skills spoke on the "Demolition Card Scheme and Qualifications"

 

David R Turner, IDE President, presented the history of the IDE and benefits of membership.

 

 

South of England

 

A well attended meeting was held at the Rubens Hotel, Buckingham Palace Road, London on 12 June.

 

Members discussed their concerns regarding the disposal of concrete and contaminated waste with a view to making representation to the Environment Agency and HSE. 

 

A further meeting will be arranged following a future NFDC Regional meeting

 

 

South West - South Wales - M5 area

 

IDE Council member, Duncan Rudall, organised a very successful meeting on 8 November 2007 at the Aztec Hotel, Bristol.

 

Nichola Elvy of Building Health Ltd talked about the advantages in encouraging a healthy workforce while Stephen Fraine (HSE) spoke about the challenges of CDM2007 and led discussion on how the IDE and HSE could work together to achieve even higher standards in the industry.
